The day started out fine but mid-morning… well… that’s when an “issue” arose.
It was a cold but clear and beautiful day. A light, majestic snowfall the night before accentuating the beauty of smooth groomed trails. The six of us had breakfast that early February morning prior to setting out on a day’s worth of snowmobiling, but did we all really have a good breakfast?
It is important to remember that breakfast is the most important meal of the day, itsets the body up for the upcoming day’s activities. Yes, you do have time for breakfast (Ha, I just heard you think that you don’t have time) and you can make it simple and beneficial and sometimes creatively exciting! I like the creatively exciting part, no surprise to those who know me.
Breakfast favorites are too numerous to list but I like the idea of a breakfast that will tame the young, mid-aged, experienced age, and of course the millennial.
So, try Crepes. What do you mean you don’t like crepes? Are you kidding me? Really… you can’t be serious?
Boy it bothers me when someone says they won’t like them, without even trying, especially when they discourage children from a new experience. Let them try it for themselves and figure it out!
Crepe Recipe for Hungry Snowmobilers
Crepes are easy. Think of it as a scrumptious flat pancake that is traditionally homemade. No box ingredients here my friends. Whatever they put in those pre-mixes is a complete mystery. You have to mix it, so you might as well mix it with good ingredients that no kitchen should be without.
Snowmobile crepe recipe yields about 4 to 5 delectable ten-inch crepes.
Mix 1 cup of flour, 2 large eggs, 1 cup of whole milk and a 1/8-1/4 cup of oatmeal in a mixing bowl. Blend ingredients adding more milk if needed, slowly, to a semi-liquid consistency. Do not overmix, and then let sit for 2-3 minutes. Oatmeal may absorb some liquid so you may have to add a touch more milk. (a touch = just the right amount)
Pre-heat your favorite frying pan on the stove and add a touch of canola or any oil to coat the entire pan. Ladle in some of this magic crepe potion and swirl in around to coat the entire base of the fry pan. Cook but do not burn and flip them when they are a golden brown. They do cook fast, adjust heat as needed.
I like to precook cut up apples/pears, or any fruit, in a touch of water and butter to garnish these hearty breakfast crepes.
Crepe Fillings and Toppings
The best way to eat these masterpieces is to place one in the center of your plate and add filling: fruit, peanut butter, meat, etc, then roll them up and drizzle Pure NH Maple Syrup over the top.
Yum-Yum. Protein, hearty carbs, fruit, all natural, great taste, and a choice for a variety of personal taste buds that will stick with you the whole day.
Coffee Alone is Not Breakfast
With breakfast complete, we are ready head out on the sleds. Five of us with a hearty crepe breakfast and one without. You need to realize that several cups of coffee alone is not a breakfast but a cup does go well with crepes!
Time To Ride
The sledding was fantastic, light snow dust in the air, only a few bumps, blue sky, it was energetically awesome at the 15-degree temperature. We traveled deep into the mountains with nobody around.
Two hours into the ride the “issue” arose. I got the sign to pull over… and what do I hear?
“So, are we going to stop and eat because I am starving, I could eat a horse.” “I’m riding with the Trail Side Cook King, you need to feed us!”
I look over and reply “The rest of us ate and we are out here to ride baby, we’ll eat later, guess you should have had breakfast.”
From the back of the pack I hear someone else chime in “Seriously dude?”
