What Is That Puddle Under Your Car?
What Is That Puddle Under Your Car?
You walk out to your car, keys in hand, coffee in the other, ready to take on the day. But then—wait a second—what’s that puddle under your car? Uh oh. Is your car crying? Did it spring a leak? Don’t panic just yet—let’s play detective.
The “It’s Nothing, Don’t Worry” Puddle
If it’s clear and watery, you’re probably safe. On hot days, your car’s A/C works hard, and condensation drips onto the pavement. That’s your car sweating, not breaking down.
The “Pay Attention” Puddles
- Dark and oily? That’s motor oil. Your car is basically bleeding, so don’t ignore it. Check if you need to add oil and take your vehicle in for a service.
- Bright green, pink, or orange with a sweet smell? That’s coolant. If you ignore it, your engine may overheat.
- Reddish puddle? That could be transmission or power steering fluid. Your car is whispering, “Please see a doctor…soon.”
- Brake fluid leak? This one is fairly rare, but if you spot something slippery and amber-colored, get your vehicle checked immediately.
What You Can Do?
Slide a piece of cardboard under your vehicle overnight to see what drips down. Small spots may be okay for now, but growing puddles are your cue to involve a mechanic.
